How laser works

How it works

Targeted hair bulb action

Laser hair removal uses a diode laser at two different frequencies of light to offer targeted treatment of the hair bulb. A ray of light is attracted by the color of the hair shaft and travels down to the bulb. The cells responsible for hair growth are destroyed when the light hits them at the right time. Because different hairs are at different stages in their life cycle, we need more than one treatment to make sure the bulb is destroyed at the perfect moment in the life cyle.

What we use

LightSheer Desire

Laser hair removal machines have come a long way from where they began. We operate with the LightSheer Desire system, the gold standard for laser hair reduction in Canada, and a one of a kind machine in Ottawa. This machine is safe, effective, and works on all skin types, including dark skin types.

The LightSheer Desire comes with 3 different handpieces and 2 different frequencies of light, each allowing for specific treatment for a wide range of patients. The high speed handpiece covers a large area of skin for fast treatment. It uses a vacuum suction to reduce pain and improve the contact with the hair. A full leg can be done in 45 minutes, a process which would previously take double that time at least.

Our other handpieces are smaller and more precise, allowing us to treat smaller areas. Many patients enjoy the CoolTip technology that the LightSheer offers with its smaller handpiece. It makes sure that your experience is comfortable and efficient.

Expectations

Discomfort

During the procedure and shortly after, you might experience an itching sensation which degree will vary according my hair density, the area's sensitivity, and treatment head used but that does not last long. A mild “sun-burn” sensation may follow for typically up to one hour and will be reduced with application of cooling and soothing creams.

Perifollicular erythema/edema

Severity and duration of the rash depend on the intensity of the treatment and the sensitivity of the area to be treated. These phenomena may be reduced with application of cooling and/or inflammatory creams.

Micro-crusting over some areas with very dense and coarse hair

May take 5 to 10 days to flake off and it is important not to manipulate or pick which may otherwise lead to scarring.

Bruising

May rarely occur and may last several days
